How is the Transport Index (TI) calculated?

The TI equals the maximum dose rate in mrem/hr at 1 meter from the package surface (mSv/h × 100), per 49 CFR 172.403(c). The label category is determined by both the TI and the surface dose rate, and the more restrictive governs: White-I requires TI 0 and surface dose ≤ 0.5 mrem/hr; Yellow-II covers TI ≤ 1 with surface dose ≤ 50 mrem/hr; above either bound the package is Yellow-III.

How do I generate a Bill of Lading for a radioactive material shipment?

In RadShip.com, classify the package, save it, then build a consignment: add packages, shipper, consignee, carrier, and the 24-hour emergency contact. The generated BOL prints the full basic description per 49 CFR 172.202/172.203 — UN number, proper shipping name, class 7, radionuclides, activity, label category, and Transport Index — with RQ printed per the engine’s determination.

Does RadShip handle multi-package consignments?

Yes. A ground consignment can carry multiple packages of mixed types, and the consignment is evaluated as a whole: a running consignment ALEC sum checks the aggregate exempt-consignment limit across the set, a package whose classification changes in context is re-classified by the engine before printing, and the BOL prints one line per package with a totals row. Air consignments carry one package per DGD.

Can RadShip generate the Dangerous Goods Declaration for air shipments?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Classify the package in Air (IATA DGR) mode and build an air consignment to produce a Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods, with per-nuclide activities for multi-nuclide packages, the CAO designation for cargo-aircraft-only shipments, and required chemical form and person signatory.

Can the calculator decay-correct activities to the ship date?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Enter the assay date and planned ship date and the engine decays every activity to the ship date before classifying (parent nuclide only), showing entered versus decayed activity per nuclide. The decayed activities carry onto the shipping papers.
