Radioactive Materials Shipper Training & Certification

Purpose-built courses for Radiation Safety Officers and hazmat shipping personnel. Learn exactly what the regulations require — and how to prove it.

First course enrolling May 2026

Built for radioactive hazmat shippers — and the people who support them

Class 7 Shippers

If you classify, package, label, document, or offer radioactive material for transport, 49 CFR 172.704 requires you to be trained. This course gives you a documented certificate that proves it.

Radiation Safety Officers

You're responsible for your facility's compliance program, but may not have been trained on the shipping regulations specifically. This course closes that gap and helps you build a defensible training record for your staff.

Support & Logistics Staff

Health physics technicians, hazmat coordinators, and shipping clerks who touch any part of the Class 7 workflow are hazmat employees under 172.704 too — and need the same training.

Training built on 14 years of Class 7 shipping experience

Most radioactive materials training is written by general hazmat trainers who have never classified a radioactive source or completed a Type A package calculation. RadShip is built by a trained DOT Class 7 hazmat shipper with over a decade of hands-on experience in 49 CFR, NRC, and IATA compliance.

That means no generic content padded to hit a word count. Every module covers exactly what you need to know to ship without a violation — and nothing you don't.

What 49 CFR 172.704 requires

Federal law requires every hazmat employee who ships radioactive material to complete training before performing regulated functions. Under 49 CFR 172.704, your training must cover four areas:

General Awareness

Recognize hazmat, understand the HMR, and identify Class 7 material.

Function-Specific

Classification, packaging, labeling, and documentation for your role.

Safety Training

Emergency response, personal protection, and accident prevention.

Security Awareness

Recognizing security threats and facility security plan requirements.

Training must be completed within 90 days of employment or change of function, and recertified every three years. Employers must keep training records for each hazmat employee. This course covers all four required areas and provides a dated certificate for your compliance documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Who is required to have radioactive materials shipping training?

Under 49 CFR 172.704, any employee who directly affects hazmat transportation safety must be trained. This includes anyone who prepares radioactive material for shipment, signs shipping papers, loads packages, or performs any function subject to the hazmat regulations. This applies to shippers, RSOs, health physics technicians, and logistics coordinators at any facility that ships Class 7 material.

How often does DOT Class 7 training need to be renewed?

DOT requires recertification every three years under 49 CFR 172.704(c)(2). Employees must also receive training within 90 days of initial employment or change in job function. IATA requires recertification every two years for air shipments.

Does this course satisfy 49 CFR 172.704 requirements?

This course covers all four components required by 49 CFR 172.704: general awareness/familiarization, function-specific training, safety training, and security awareness. It is designed specifically for employees who ship DOT Class 7 radioactive materials and provides a certificate of completion for your training records.

Can I complete the training online?

Yes. DOT does not mandate a specific training format — 49 CFR 172.704 requires that training cover the required topics and be documented, but it does not require in-person instruction. Online self-paced training is fully compliant as long as it covers all required subject areas.

What is the difference between DOT and NRC training requirements?

DOT training (49 CFR 172 Subpart H) covers transportation of radioactive materials on public roads and highways. NRC training (10 CFR Part 19/20) covers possession, use, and radiation protection at your facility. Most facilities that ship radioactive material need both. This course focuses on the DOT transportation requirements.

Do I get a certificate of completion?

Yes. Upon passing the course assessments, you receive a dated certificate of completion that documents your training for compliance records. DOT requires employers to maintain training records for each hazmat employee, and this certificate satisfies that documentation requirement.
